Homeless Youth Luncheon

Wednesday, May 02, 2012
12:00 – 1:00 PM (Registration begins at 11:30 AM)

Location:
Radisson Roseville
2540 North Cleveland Ave.
Roseville, MN 55413

Be our guest at a complimentary fundraising luncheon to become part of the movement to end youth experiencing homelessness in our community.

Did you know that 2,500 Minnesota youth are homeless every night? A 46 percent increase since 2006, according to a 2009 study by the Wilder Foundation.

What explains the increase? More rebelliousness? No. More bad kids? We don’t believe in bad kids. An uncertain economy? Maybe. Whatever the reason, the outcomes are the same. These are children forced by circumstance to face adult challenges before they should.

Youth experiencing homelessness need more than just a bed, they need to be supported and cared for at this critical moment in their lives.

LSS Homeless Youth Services strives to help young people get off the streets and into a safe environment through a continuum of services. Services include street outreach by non-judgmental staff; short and long-term shelters; transitional housing for teen moms and their children; counseling to establish stability and a healthy life-style; and independent living education. Our goal is to make certain these youth know they are important, cared for, and have a place to turn for safety, dignity and hope.

Join us and be inspired by stories told by courageous youth who were homeless but found safety with LSS. No minimum or maximum contribution required.

Dear Colleagues,

A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, HR3076 that would amend the student exemption from the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, so that full-time students who have previously been homeless can qualify for housing under the LIHTC program. Many of you may know this as the “student rule,” and have likely seen the adverse impact on youth who have needed to drop classes in order to qualify for housing.

This important move forward prompts two requests for you:

1. Please consider signing on to the MN letter in support of this bill.
The letter is directed to Members of the House of Representatives, which has a bill already introduced, HR3076. The bill is sponsored by Representative McDermott (WA) and co-authored by two Representatives from Minnesota, Keith Ellison and Erik Paulsen. This is not the first time Congress has sought to change this rule but this is the first time Representative Paulsen has taken leadership on this specific issue, of importance to all of us as he is both a MN member of Congress, and at this point the only Republican co-sponsor of the bill.

2. Please invite your national affiliates or organizational contacts to support the national sign-on letter.
This same letter will be submitted to all U.S. Representatives once a final list of national organizational sign-ons has been finalized. We have an opportunity within Minnesota to lead this effort and secure as many supporters as possible at the national level, to send the strong message around the importance of this change.
Senators Franken and Stabenow are also looking at a Senate-level strategy. We will communicate with you again once it is clear how we can support their leadership on the Senate side.

Please email anna.burton@lssmn.org if your organization would like to sign either letter, with the formal title of your organization you would like noted on the letter.

Thank you!
