One of the ways that the Twin Cities’ community is addressing homelessness experienced by GLBT young people is through the GLBT Host Home Program of Avenues for Homeless Youth, which offers a transformative and community-based approach to providing gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth with safe homes. As volunteers of the program, adults open their homes and their hearts to young people who need and are looking for a healthy and nurturing connection. If you are interested in hearing more about this community building program, please come to one of the following informational meetings:

Dear Colleagues,

A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, HR3076 that would amend the student exemption from the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, so that full-time students who have previously been homeless can qualify for housing under the LIHTC program. Many of you may know this as the “student rule,” and have likely seen the adverse impact on youth who have needed to drop classes in order to qualify for housing.

This important move forward prompts two requests for you:

1. Please consider signing on to the MN letter in support of this bill.
The letter is directed to Members of the House of Representatives, which has a bill already introduced, HR3076. The bill is sponsored by Representative McDermott (WA) and co-authored by two Representatives from Minnesota, Keith Ellison and Erik Paulsen. This is not the first time Congress has sought to change this rule but this is the first time Representative Paulsen has taken leadership on this specific issue, of importance to all of us as he is both a MN member of Congress, and at this point the only Republican co-sponsor of the bill.

2. Please invite your national affiliates or organizational contacts to support the national sign-on letter.
This same letter will be submitted to all U.S. Representatives once a final list of national organizational sign-ons has been finalized. We have an opportunity within Minnesota to lead this effort and secure as many supporters as possible at the national level, to send the strong message around the importance of this change.
Senators Franken and Stabenow are also looking at a Senate-level strategy. We will communicate with you again once it is clear how we can support their leadership on the Senate side.

Please email anna.burton@lssmn.org if your organization would like to sign either letter, with the formal title of your organization you would like noted on the letter.

Thank you!
